Water Conservation

Why It Is Important

Water conservation is when you use as little water as possible and prevent water from being contaminated. Water Conservation is important because if we run out of clean fresh water we will have nothing to water plants with or to drink. But if we can conserve it, we will have enough clean fresh water for every living thing.

Ways Kids Can Help

Turn Off Water When Brushing Your Teeth

I did an experiment and found that if you turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth, you can save about 1 gallon of water if you brush your teeth 3 times a day for 1 week. If every kid in my class of 26 did this for one week, just our class could save 1352 gallons of water in a year.

Don't Run the Sprinklers as Long

If you don't run your sprinklers as long, you can save a lot of water. Most people over run their sprinklers. A good time to run sprinklers is in the early morning around 5am. The reason behind this is that the water doesn't evaporate as quickly and the wind isn't blowing as much so that your lawn gets more of the water. Your lawn only needs about 1 inch of water per week. If you use a timer, you can make sure that you don't over water. If your family doesn't own a timer, you can volunteer to keep an eye on the sprinkler and let your parents know when its time to move it to another area or turn it off.

Rain Barrel

By having a rain barrel, you can collect water and use it for watering plants. This will save drinking water.

Garden Watering

To minimize wasted water, install a drip irrigation system to deliver water directly to your garden or other plants around the house.

Prevent Water Contamination

Instead of pouring used motor oil and household chemicals down the drain or down storm drains, you can take it to an approved disposal site. Go to Earth911 to find out where to take them. If you are in Harris County,TX, click here to find our local hazardous waste disposal location.
