Energy Conservation

Why It Is Important

Energy conservation is when someone saves as much energy as possible. It also can refer to using more efficient appliances. Conservation is important because we must conserve our natural resources. If we can conserve them, we will have enough energy for a long time.

Ways Kids Can Help

Check Power Usage

If you check power usage around your home, you can see how much power your electrical appliances are using.
You can also check to see where you could use less power. By working to conserve power, you can conserve natural resources and lower your electric bills. One inexpensive device that checks power usage is called a Kill A Watt. It will show you how much power most of your plug in electrical appliances are using. If you use it, it could pay for itself and more. For example, I found that if I just turn off my computer monitor when I'm not using it, I can save about $50 per year. Kill A Watt monitors are very inexpensive and will easily pay for themselves with all of the savings you will get from making informed adjustments to how you use common devices around your house. You can get one at Killawattplus.com or at most bigger retailers.

Turn Off Lights

If you turn off lights when you are not using them, you can save a lot of power and money. You can also use a X10 home automation kit to schedule times that the lights turn on and off. For example, you can automatically turn the lights out at night or when everyone is away during the day.

 Computer Power Management

If you turn off computers or put them in standby when you are not using them, you can save power and money. You can go to power management and set up your computer to go to sleep when it becomes idle.

Programmable Thermostats

If you have a programmable thermostat, you can tell it when to stop heating or cooling the house when you are not at home. If, for example, no one is at the house on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 7:00 am - 5:00 pm, you can turn off the heating or cooling during that time. Then an hour before your return, you tell it to make the house comfortable again. Most people actually have one, but never program it. They are easy to use and you can offer to help program it for your family.

Adjust Temperature On Hot Water Heaters

If possible, have your parents set you water heaters at 140 degrees or below. This temperature allows you to have hot water and not waste energy.

Use Efficient Light Bulbs

Energy efficient light bulbs conserve power. Offer to help your family switch out the light bulbs for more efficient ones.
